Hawaiian Island Creations THROW DA SHAKA

Hawaiian Island Creation’s THROW DA SHAKA Concert 2009 was held at the Waikiki Shell with Diamond Head as a back drop on Saturday January 17. The concert benefited the Konishiki Kids Foundation.

We were blessed with beautiful weather. Hard to believe that it was rainy and windy the day before. The gates opened at 4:00 and people started to trickle in. Many enjoyed their beers, snacks and bento with friends on the lawn. This relaxed atmosphere continued to backstage as the musicians talked story and enjoyed waiting for their turns to perform. Really a neat atmosphere!

The concert started around 5:00 p.m. Lina Girl, popular DJ for KCCN FM100, appeared on stage and introduced the first group, Resilience. Other local groups followed, Nesian N.I.N.E., Rebel Souljahz, Manao Company. And then it was Lost Coast Sound’s turn.

White smoke ascended on stage, the sound of sirens could be heard throughout the crowd. And then the young men rushed to the stage carrying the flags of Hawaii, Tonga, Guam, Fiji, Australia, The Philippines and Japan-a Sea of flags. Then there were fireworks as the excitement grew among the audience.

Through the white smoke you could see the band Lost Coast Sound and their singer Siaosi. As Siaosi sang his powerful song the entire crowd rocked. They all danced to the beat of the reggae music. Everyone was feeling good.

Next to perform was Kiwini of Lost Coast Sound. The crowd went wild as he came out on stage dressed in a black suit and sunglasses…cool. Siaosi and Laga Savea sang back up. The crowd danced and sang along to his familiar tunes such as “You Left Me”.

Then came Laga Savea, performing “Roots Satisfaction” and “Remember When” with Siaosi and Kiwini. There was a Polynesian dance act midway. They danced to Laga’s music. The audience, many of Polynesian ancestry, went wild and the cheers got louder than ever.

The last Lost Coast Sound musician to perform at the Throw Da Shaka Concert was none other than the ever popular Fiji. Not only did he excite the audience but also the other musicians. J Boog and Siaosi collaborated on Fiji’s songs and created a totally different Fiji sound for everyone to hear. Fiji continued singing his tunes and the crowd sang along. They danced, jumped and cheered creating a happy mood in the entire arena. And even after Fiji left the stage, the audience continued clapping and yelling “Hana Hou” asking for an encore.

Chris, a happy and excited spectator, said, “The music was a nice blend of Reggae, Island and R&B. It was a great concert!” It seems like they all wanted to stay at the Waikiki Shell and continue to party.
